the group 2017/18: our research encompasses all aspects of synthetic organic chemistry, with a particular focus on the total synthesis of biologically active molecules, and the development of new reactions including transition metal-catalyzed transformations and cascade processes. we aim to use the exciting and challenging chemical structures displayed by bioactive natural products to inspire the development of new reactions. high importance is placed on both reaction generality (to demonstrate wide substrate scope), and on finding additional uses of the reaction products (to increase method utility). within the theme of reaction development, we have particular interests in the use of metal-mediated reactions to rapidly construct complex functional molecules, and in new applications of organosilicon chemistry. our work in these areas has a strong element of mechanistic analysis, where we collaborate with prof. rob paton (university of oxford) from a theoretical perspective. our interests extend to the uses of organic chemistry in other disciplines. we collaborate with dr. janet lovett (university of st. andrews) and prof. tom brown (university of oxford) on the development of novel probes for epr spectroscopy. this work aims towards applications in the virology field, particularly in the areas of human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) and hepatitis c virus (hcv), in collaboration with dr. emma anderson (university warwick) and prof. david evans (university of warwick). we further collaborate with prof. greg challis (university of warwick) on exploring aspects of the biosynthesis of polyketide natural products. further details of current research areas can be found under the “research” menu. recent news: 06/18: jeff has now left!
